What is the string technique for fishhook removal?
The string technique, also known as the string-yank technique, was first described by a New Zealand physician who observed it in the local fishermen. A loop of string is wrapped around the bend in the hook, the barb is disengaged, and the hook is rapidly jerked out of the skin. Most fishhooks can be removed by this method, often with minimal pain. This is the preferred method of fishhook removal by those who know how it’s done.
What is the advantage of fishhook removal string over other types of string?
FRS is actually 1/4 inch wide cotton mesh "tape", which comes tied into a loop. FRS feels comfortable and secure in your hand. When a fishhook is removed with fishing line the hook can fly out 10 feet or more, potentially causing further injuries. In our tests FRS frequently retained the hook after extraction because the cotton mesh snags the barb on the hook.
